What Can You Use Instead of Fabric Softener? Explore the Alternatives

Laundry perfume can be an alternative when you want fragrance, while dryer balls may help with softness and static during tumble drying. Neither automatically performs every function of fabric softener.

Before choosing a replacement, consider what you want to achieve. Clean fabrics, a soft feel, a beautiful scent and fewer creases involve different stages of care. Understanding those needs makes it easier to choose products that work together.

What are you replacing?

Fabric softener is added during the final rinse to help suitable fabrics feel softer and more comfortable. Depending on its formula, it can also help reduce static and make ironing easier. It may leave a fragrance, too.

If scent is your priority, a dedicated fragrance product may meet that particular need. If you want softness, look for a solution that supports that result. Neither takes over the cleaning role of detergent.

Here is how the main options compare:

OptionWhat it can offerMain limitation
Laundry perfumeA chosen fragranceSoftening and static control depend on the formula
Dryer ballsSupport for softness and reduced static during tumble dryingOnly relevant to compatible dryers and tumble-dryable textiles
VinegarOften suggested in household recipesSome appliance manufacturers advise against using it inside washing machines
Baking sodaA laundry aid sometimes used for odour-related concernsNot a direct replacement for a final-rinse softener

Laundry perfume: choose it for fragrance

Laundry perfume gives fragrance its own place in your routine. Instead of choosing a softener mainly because you like its smell, you can select a scent separately—from fresh and floral to woody and warm.

That makes it an option if fragrance is the benefit you are looking for. However, additional properties vary between formulas, so do not assume every laundry perfume will also soften fabrics or reduce static.

For both softness and fragrance, a suitable fabric softener and laundry perfume can complement each other when their instructions allow combined use. Our guide to laundry perfume and fabric softener explains their roles in more detail.

Measure according to the current product label and add the perfume where directed. For application guidance, read how to use laundry perfume.

Dryer balls: support during drying

Dryer balls help separate items as the drum turns, allowing air to circulate between them. They may also help soften clothes and reduce static during drying.

They are an accessory for the drying stage, rather than something to pour into the softener compartment. They do not clean laundry or provide the fragrance of a dedicated scent product.

Consider them if tumble drying is part of your routine. Check the garment care labels and the instructions for your dryer and accessories first.

Vinegar and baking soda: understand the limitations

Vinegar is frequently suggested as a homemade fabric-softener replacement. Its familiarity, however, does not establish whether it is appropriate for your washing machine.

Whirlpool warns that vinegar’s acidity can damage components such as rubber seals and hoses over time. Check your appliance manufacturer’s instructions before trying a household recipe. Read more in Whirlpool’s guidance on vinegar in washing machines.

Baking soda is sometimes used as a laundry aid for odour-related concerns. It should not be treated as interchangeable with a product formulated for the final rinse or placed in a dispenser without checking the appliance guidance; it may cause clogging.

Essential oils and citric acid also appear in homemade recipes. Their concentration, application and compatibility with fabrics require verification. In particular, an essential oil is not equivalent to a finished laundry perfume.

From choosing a substitute to building a complete routine

Comparing alternatives reveals a useful distinction: one product may provide fragrance, another supports softness, and a drying accessory works at a different stage altogether.

Amarella brings these separate needs into a four-step fabric-care ritual:

  • Clean — Washing Gel: cleans fabrics, creating the foundation for the care that follows.
  • Soften — Fabric Softener: helps suitable textiles feel soft and comfortable.
  • Scent — Laundry Perfume: adds a fragrance you have chosen for your clothes and home textiles.
  • Finish — Crease Releaser: helps smooth creases for a cared-for appearance.

Each product contributes a different result. Washing gel takes care of cleaning; softener addresses the feel of the fabric; perfume makes fragrance a personal choice; and crease releaser provides the finishing touch.

When looking for an alternative to fabric softener, decide which benefit you want to replace. For a routine that addresses all four needs, give each stage its own dedicated product, following the product instructions and textile care labels.
